Feed Mills Encyclopedia 2011-2021: Laurent Bellec unveils his photographic collection

The photographic artist Laurent Bellec issued an encyclopaedia dedicated to animal nutrition factories around the world. It comprises approximately 300 pictures that document uniquely the story of the industry as a whole.

Laurent Bellec’s artistic project, gathered here in an encyclopedia aims to create the largest-ever photographic collection of architectural images of factories in the animal feed sector in Europe and around the world. According to Laurent, “they show a contemporary heritage, are a reflection of an industrial period and constitute tomorrow’s historical database. It is a unique collection, a marker in the history of work and industry. As such, the encyclopaedia meets the standards of museum collections. It has its place among documentary collections of the contemporary heritage of functional buildings and architecture”.

Laurent’s photographs captured the magnitude of the compound feed industry, whose factories are part of the landscape of several regions all over the world. From large concrete cathedrals that mark the landscape in their isolation to small traditional brick mills in the village centre, and to plants whose hybrid architecture reflects the passage of time and the evolution of the profession. Laurent Bellec lets us discover the diversity of styles embodied in the real estate of feed mill plants. The accompanying booklet features introductory statements from FEFAC President Asbjørn Børsting and IFIF President Daniel Bercovici, highlighting the artistic value and contribution of Bellec at previous FEFAC and IFIF Congress and Annual meetings. Laurent helped improved the public image and perception of the European and global feed industry and its role in shaping rural areas and landscapes.
