The GFLI

The Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI) is the product of an international consortium that was formed to establish a database that would serve as the leading reference for information about the environmental performance of feed ingredients.

In December 2018, the first public version of the GFLI (Global Feed LCA Institute) Database was made available. This first version of the database consists of about 1,500 datasets of the main feed ingredients used in Europe and in other parts of the world. The objective of the newly founded non-profit organisation is to become the global reference for Feed LCA data and aims at reaching 15.000 datasets through new Feed LCA Data generation projects from other world regions and related feed material sectors. The newly founded GFLI legal entity was set up in September 2019 as a non-profit organisation under US law, by the founding members, FEFAC, AFIA (US), ANAC (Canada), NSF (Norway) and IFIF (International Feed Industry Federation). In the meantime, many new members and business partners have joined the GFLI. Nick Major sits on the GFLI Board on behalf and is currently the Chair of the GFLI.

The PEFCR Feed for Food-Producing Animals allows for the use of secondary data to calculate the footprint of the production of the feed ingredients used in a given feed formulation. Reference is made to the GFLI Database as a source of LCA data that is compliant with the requirements of the PEFCR Feed. The GFLI allows for different types of uses of the database, based on the level of ambition of a given company. Increasingly, commercial parties are releasing environmental footprint calculation software which make direct use of the LCA data made available in the GFLI Database.
